Oakland’s 911 dispatch system glitches again, slowing emergency response A computer system failure Saturday morning has again forced dispatchers in Oakland’s high-volume 911 center to take down callers’ information with pen and paper, slowing the city’s ability to respond to emergencies. The system, which police officers rely upon to communicate with dispatchers, had been down for about 26 hours this week until it was temporarily restored early Friday evening. But as of around 9:10 a.m. Saturday, city officials said they had again “observed impacts” to the system.“All dispatch staff have resumed manual call routing,” the city said in a statement. “As a result, routing for calls is currently slower than normal. All emergency calls are being answered and appropriately dispatched for police, fire, and medical services.”Related ArticlesCrime and Public Safety | Oakland: Police bust illegal casino, seize firearms Crime and Public Safety | Tesla Devil’s Slide crash: Accused doctor ...

Yellen Had Candid Five-Hour Meeting With China’s He, US Says Viktoria Dendrinou(Bloomberg) — US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen held five hours of talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Beijing, the first in-depth exchange between the nations’ top economic policymakers as they seek to dial back strains in the relationship. The meeting on Saturday capped Yellen’s engagements on her first visit to China as Treasury chief, a trip she described as a mission to revive engagement between the two largest economies that’s deteriorated in recent years while friction has soared over issues from Taiwan to technology access. The meeting was “candid, constructive, and comprehensive,” the Treasury Department said in a statement. While Yellen raised “issues of concern,” she also discussed the Biden administration’s “approach to seek healthy economic competition with China, with a level playing field for American workers and businesses.”Yellen began by telling He that there’s “...

The minimum wage just went up in several Bay Area cities–will it make a difference?

The minimum wage just went up in several Bay Area cities–will it make a difference? Many of the Bay Area’s lowest-paid workers are receiving a pay bump this month as several cities increase their local minimum wage. While the wage hikes are welcomed by labor advocates who say low-income workers are being squeezed to the breaking point, they add that it’s not nearly enough to address the region’s affordability crisis. In Fremont, with 223,000 people, the minimum wage rose July 1 from $16 to $16.80, a 5% increase meant to keep up with higher prices for rent, food and other goods and services. In Berkeley, the minimum wage increased from $16.99 to $18.07.“I only wish that they were bigger increases,” said Isaiah Toney, deputy director of campaigns for East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy, an organization that addresses economic equity issues and advocates for low-wage workers and communities of color. “We see not only that wages aren’t keeping up with cost-of-living and inflation increases, but other costs are increasing faster — like housing.”In the San Fr...

Warriors land coveted forward Dario Saric on one-year deal, per reports

Warriors land coveted forward Dario Saric on one-year deal, per reports The Golden State Warriors have agreed with forward Dario Saric on a veteran minimum contract, according to reports. That checks off a prioritized box for general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. in his first foray into NBA free agency leading the Warriors’ front office.Saric, 29, is a 6-foot-10 stretch forward who fits perfectly in head coach Steve Kerr’s scheme. In his six-year career, Saric has proven to be a big that can move the ball in a motion offense and pose a legitimate threat as a 3-point shooter. There were rumors that Saric had his eye on joining the Miami Heat should they land Damian Lillard in a trade, but his seamless fit with Golden State is likely a reason why Saric agreed to terms on a veteran minimum — which should slot him in at approximately $2.7 million for the season.“All we’re going to be able to have is minimums, so we have to work with that,” Dunleavy said on draft night. “We’re looking at veteran players who can fit into our rotation. Shooting is...

Pedersen wins Tour de France mass sprint after Cavendish crashes; Vingegaard keeps yellow jersey LIMOGES, France (AP) — With Mark Cavendish out of the picture, former world champion Mads Pedersen claimed a second career stage win at the Tour de France on Saturday with a big burst of power to win a mass sprint.Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard kept the yellow jersey after the 201-kilometer (125-mile) eighth stage from Libourne to Limoges in central France.Pedersen proved the strongest in the long final stretch of road leading to the finish line and the Danish rider held off a late challenge from Jasper Philipsen, who had won all three previous sprints this year. “My boys gave me a perfect leadout,” said Pedersen, who rides for the Lidl-Trek team. “The final stretch was very painful. I still had the legs to finish it off.”Wout Van Aert completed the stage podium in third. The stage was marred by several crashes, including the one that ruled Cavendish out of the race. The ace sprinter hit the ground with 64 kilometers (40 miles) left while riding at the back of the peloton. The Br...

Cubs place shortstop Dansby Swanson on 10-day injured list with bruised left foot NEW YORK (AP) — The Chicago Cubs placed Dansby Swanson on the 10-day injured list Saturday because of a bruised left foot and anticipate it will be a short absence for their All-Star shortstop. The move is retroactive to Thursday, a day after Swanson left in the seventh inning of Chicago’s 4-3 win at Milwaukee and he is eligible to return July 16 when the Cubs host the Red Sox.“It is unfortunate to get into this position,” Swanson said before Chicago continued a three-game series with the Yankees “The biggest thing — just from a timing standpoint — I’m getting four days with the break. It was almost, in a way, like a good insurance policy not to lose some retroactive dates.”In the first year of a seven-year, $177 million contract, Swanson is hitting .258 with 10 homers and 36 RBIs in 83 games. He was selected to his second All-Star team and replaced on the National League roster by Arizona’s Geraldo Perdomo. To replace Swanson, infielder Miles Mastrobuoni was recalled from Triple-A Io...

Verstappen takes pole at British GP for 5th straight F1 race as McLaren goes 2nd and 3rd SILVERSTONE, England (AP) — Lando Norris nearly delighted the British Grand Prix crowd with pole position. There was just one problem: Max Verstappen.“It’s always Max. He always ruins everything for everyone,” Norris joked after the Dutch driver beat his time for his fifth pole position in a row on Saturday. The British crowd roared in celebration when Norris briefly took over the top spot late in the qualifying session, before Verstappen went yet faster to take it back by .241 seconds. The result may be routine in Formula One — Red Bull has taken pole in nine out of 10 races — but it followed a session of tension, another failure for Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Pérez, and a moment of jeopardy for the Dutch driver himself.Verstappen made contact with the pit wall and broke his front wing while leaving his garage during a red-flag stoppage in the first part of qualifying. “I just understeered and it just didn’t grip,” he told the team over the radio.Red Bull replaced the wing an...
