Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:32:26 GMT

DENVER (AP) — Nikola Jokic couldn’t take his gaze off the NBA championship trophy sitting next to his arm.The Denver Nuggets big man stared and stared at the list of teams engraved on the shiny gold prize before something suddenly hit him.“They didn’t put our name on here,” he said Monday at media day.Actually, it was — on the very front, where Jokic couldn’t quite see. Charlie Blackmon and Colorado Rockies agree to $13 million contract for 2024 What the two-time NBA MVP and the Nuggets can see quite clearly is a path toward repeating, despite losing veteran leader/sixth-man Bruce Brown through free agency. That's provided, of course, they can guard against one thing — complacency.“No one cares what you did last season,” said Nuggets coach Michael Malone, whose team beat Miami in five games to win the NBA title. “We had success in that moment. But that moment is gone. We have a new opportunity and challenge in front of us.”Nuggets trust Jokic to be his triple-double ...

Bruins notebook: B’s drop another one to Flyers

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:32:26 GMT

Keep in mind that approximately half the players in a Bruin uniform on Monday in Philadelphia won’t be on the Boston roster when the B’s open the regular season next week. Still, losing never makes you feel good. The B’s lost their third straight preseason game and second in a row to the Flyers, 3-1, managing just one power-play goal in the tilt. The B’s had to kill three penalties in the first period but they were the ones who took the first lead of the game on the power play. Charlie Coyle, in his first game of the preseason, made a beautiful backhand pass to an open Morgan Geekie in the new slot and Geekie snapped home his first as a Bruin. Matt Poitras, who had set up two good chances earlier in the game, picked up the secondary helper. Poitras also won eight of 11 draws. But the bottom fell out for the B’s in second period as he Flyers scored three unanswered, the first two less than a minute apart. SAN DIEGO -- After years of dealing with drought conditions, the region’s water supply is in good shape, ready to meet the demand for 2024, according to the San Diego County Water Authority (SDCWA).“Last year we were starting Water Year ‘23 in really heavy drought conditions with state mandatory reductions and this year there's no mandatory water use reductions… there's a lot of water in storage in Northern California, reservoirs are full,” said Efren Lopez, water resources specialist with SDCWA.That’s because of all the storms over the past year that drenched California, delivering above-average amounts of rain and snow with the Sierra snowpack reaching 200% above average.Conditions are also improved along the Colorado River, which provides San Diego County with more than half its water supply.Reservoirs at Lake Mead and Lake Powell are now a little more than one-third full. ‘Octobake’: Santa Ana winds to warm up San Diego “It’s been every year watching it go lower and lower and ...

Jacksonville sheriff says body camera video shows officers were justified in beating suspect

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:32:26 GMT

A Florida sheriff released body camera video Monday that he says shows his officers were justified when they repeatedly punched, elbowed and kneed a drug suspect who appeared to resist arrest even after being zapped with a stun gun and pinned to the ground. The suspect’s attorney, meanwhile, is calling for a federal investigation of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and accused Sheriff T.K. Waters of a coverup. Friday’s arrest of Le’Keian Woods drew national attention after the release of a passerby’s cellphone video showing officers beating him and appearing to slam him face first onto the ground after he was handcuffed. Waters and Mike Shell, his assistant chief for public accountability, told a news conference that the officers knew Woods had once been accused of murder, was on probation for armed robbery and had been connected to firearms and drug trafficking when they gave chase to him Friday after a traffic stop. Mug shots taken after Woods’...

Sheriff Paul Penzone of Arizona’s Maricopa County says he’s stepping down a year early in January

PHOENIX (AP) — Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone announced Monday that he is resigning in January, a full year before his term ends. Penzone said at a news conference that he decided to step down and not seek a third term so he can explore other possibilities in public service. He didn’t elaborate. “I think it would be appropriate to depart from the office in January and clear the way so that during the last year of my term going into the election there aren’t distractions,” Penzone said.Penzone is credited with ending some of the polices of his predecessor Joe Arpaio, which have been widely criticized as anti-immigrant and racist. The department runs the county jail and oversees enforcement of the unincorporated areas of Arizona’s most populous county. After roundly defeating Arpaio in the 2016 election, Penzone tore down an outdoor jail, dubbed “Tent City,” that had been widely mocked. Penzone, a Democrat, in 2020 defeated another Republican challenger who had...

Rep. Matt Gaetz files motion to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy, throwing House into new turmoil

WASHINGTON (AP) — Speaker Kevin McCarthy is facing an extraordinary referendum on his leadership of the House after a conservative member of his own Republican majority, a longtime critic, moved to launch a vote to oust him from the helm.Late Monday, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., rose in the chamber as the House was almost done for the day to file the motion — a resolution that would set a snap vote in coming days that even Gaetz acknowledged may not have enough support to remove the speaker from the job.“I have enough Republicans where at this point next week, one of two things will happen: Kevin McCarthy won’t be the speaker of the House or he’ll be the speaker of the House working at the pleasure of the Democrats,” Gaetz told reporters afterward outside the Capitol.McCarthy responded minutes later on social media, “Bring it on.”Gaetz soon retorted in a post, “Just did.”It’s a historic moment: the first time in more than 100 years that a lawmaker has actually used an obscure legi...

More than 100 dolphins found dead in Brazilian Amazon as water temperatures soar

SAO PAULO (AP) — More than 100 dolphins have died in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest in the past week as the region grapples with a severe drought, and many more could die soon if water temperatures remain high, experts say.The Mamiraua Institute, a research group of Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, said two more dead dolphins were found Monday in the region around Tefe Lake, which is key for mammals and fish in the area. Video provided by the institute showed vultures picking at the dolphin carcasses beached on the lakeside. Thousands of fish have also died, local media reported.Experts believe high water temperatures are the most likely cause of the deaths in the lakes in the region. Temperatures since last week have exceeded 39 degrees Celsius (102 degrees Fahrenheit) in the Tefe Lake region. The Brazilian government’s Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation, which manages conservation areas, said last week it had sent teams of veterinarians a...
